India and the Eelam Tamil Problem
(Some True Explanations, Part 2)
Chandrakasan, who was marginalized in the Tamileelam political arena, dreamed of seizing the political leadership by using the Indian training program and the friendship of ‘RAW’. He planned to develop organizations that would not only obey and be loyal to him but also accept him as their leader. In this way, Chandrakasan decided to develop the Tamileelam Liberation Movement (TELO) and its leader Sri Sabaratnam. At that time, the TELO movement was a small group of only 6 people without any organizational form and was inactive in Chennai. Chandrakasan’s intervention gave a new life to the moribund TELO.
‘RAW’ also wanted to give priority to and develop the TELO movement due to the lack of a clear ideology and a firm policy plan. The aim of ‘RAW’ was to militarily develop a group without a unique ideology and ideals and to make it operate as a mercenary force for India.
The training program for the TELO movement began. At that time, the July riots and the rampant Sinhala chauvinism had triggered a liberation uprising in Tamileelam. The Tamil youth community, which was filled with hatred and anger towards the Sinhala government, was ready to jump into armed struggle. Taking advantage of this revolutionary situation, the TELO movement began its recruitment work. Recruitment was done on a random basis without any selection system. Due to this, anti-social forces also largely infiltrated this movement. Chandrakasan formed a mercenary corps under the military leadership of Sri Sabarathnam. Meanwhile, the Eelam Revolutionary Liberation Front (EPRLF) and the Eelam Revolutionary Organization (EROS) also surrendered to Chandrakasan and joined the training program.
This intervention of India greatly affected the Tamileelam liberation struggle and its natural evolution.
Its revolutionary nature. The membership and military strength of the liberation organizations were turned upside down. The freedom movement of the Tamils of Eelam was tarnished by the artificial sudden swelling. Anarchy arose due to the increase in undisciplined and uncontrolled armed groups. The TVP movement was the most affected by this intervention of India.
Chandrakasan tried to establish his political power by completely excluding us from the Tamileelam armed struggle and forming a new alliance under the military leadership of TELO.
Chandrakasan knew very well that neither Prabhakaran nor the LTTE would ever accept him as the leader of the people of Tamileelam. Chandrakasan, realizing that the LTTE’s independent nature, honesty, firmness of principle, and inflexibility were not suitable for his destructive political maneuvers, tried to exclude the LTTE from the Indian training program and even planned to destroy the LTTE through the TELO movement.
We do not want to be trapped in Chandrakasan’s master plan. At the same time, we are not ready to act as India’s mercenary force. If we do not receive India’s help, we will not be able to match the military strength of other organizations and we will be destroyed. Our destruction will put an end to the freedom struggle of the people of Tamileelam.
Therefore, we accepted the fact that the Indian government approached us very late and offered us limited assistance. We received limited assistance. We established training camps on our own initiative, provided training to the movement’s cadres, and expanded the military organization. We also increased our armed forces through our own independent plans, without expecting India. We were able to reverse the military balance and thwart the conspiracy of ‘RAW’ to weaken the LTTE.
Meanwhile, the TELO, EPRLF and EROS factions formed an alliance at the instigation of Chandrakasan. It was named the Eelam National Liberation Front (ENLF). Chandrakasan was trying to isolate the LTTE movement, and to unite the Tamil Liberation Front (TULF), the Tamileelam People’s Liberation Front (PLAT) and all the liberation organizations with this three-party front, and to form an Eelam Tamil National Council and seize its leadership. Talks for this were also held in Chennai. A regulation for these national councils was also prepared. ‘RAW’ also operated in the background of this. Some Tamil leaders in America also tried tirelessly to form this national council and crown Chandrakasan.
We decided to break this political chess game in which the Tamil militant organizations were used as pawns, stop the infiltration of the American imperialist tyrants, avoid rifts and conflicts among the liberation organizations, and move forward the struggle free from the state of waiting for India. With this noble objective, we worked in cooperation with the Eelam National Liberation Front organization and tried to develop unity and understanding. We held talks with the leaders of the Eelam National Liberation Front, pointed out the connections between Chandrakasan and the American imperialist tyrants, and urged them to completely break free from Chandrakasan’s domination and move forward the struggle on the path of socialist revolution. But since organizations like TELO and EPRLF were dependent on Chandrakasan for political advice and financial support, contradictions arose among us.
