Indiscriminate violence

Indiscriminate violence

The violent struggle that erupted in Tamileelam posed a new challenge to the Sinhalese government. Bandaranaike, who had successfully crushed the armed rebellion of the JVP that had broken out in South Sri Lanka in April 1971 and killed fifteen thousand Sinhalese youth, did not hesitate to intensify state repression in Tamileelam as well.

Tamil youth were hunted down by the state armed forces. They were thrown into prison without trial. They were subjected to brutal torture. They were murdered. Due to this cruelty, many radical youths had to go hiding. The waves of violence did not subside.

The violent struggle of the Tamil youth was not regulated by a revolutionary organization with discipline, control, and a policy plan. Most of the violent attempts ended in failure as the youth, who spontaneously resorted to violence, either as individuals or in small groups, lacked experience, knowledge of weapons and ammunition, training, or clarity about war tactics and war plans. A sense of liberation, nationalism, a passion against state oppression, and a revolutionary fighting spirit were abundant among these youth.
