Major Thangesh
Ramachandran Rajendrakumar
Tamileelam: Mannar District
Birth: 10.01.1972
Death: 10.11.1995
Major Thangesh was born in Murungan on 21st March 1971. The land of pearls, as the wealthy son of Nambiar Ramachandran and his wife Rajendra. He was born in a very poor family. His father sent him to Mannar Murungan Mahavidyalaya for his primary education. He was well-known and talented among his teachers. Seeing his talents, the teachers appointed him as the student leader of the Mahavidyalaya.
During this period, Thangesh´s village was surrounded by Indian forces and people were betrayed by anti-nationals. It was during this period that he, with the aim of putting an end to the atrocities happening in our country, told his friends, “Brother, I have made a decision, I will join the movement. Rather than fight and die for freedom than live as slaves.” His friends, 2nd Lt. Nawaz and Lt. Robert, joined the movement in 1988. Upon registration, he was given the name Thangesh and trained in the 9th Battalion in Mannar.
He trained efficiently in the training camp and was well-known among the officers in charge. After the training, he was sent to his own village for political work. He explained our movement and our struggle to the people of his village. He did not stop there. Seeing his abilities, Lieutenant Colonel Suban, who was the Special Commander of the Mannar District, left him with Lakshman, who was in charge of Mannar at that time. He completed the tasks assigned there effectively.
At that time, the 2nd phase of the Eelam War began. At that time, the officers in charge planned and carried out an attack on the Sri Lankan army stationed at the old bridge in Mannar.
Thangesh was also allowed to participate in this attack. Many soldiers were killed in this attack. This camp was completely attacked and destroyed. Thangesh acted skillfully in this attack. He also showed his skills in many attacks in Mannar. For this, he received many compliments from the commander. Seeing his skills, the Mannar District Special Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Suban, took Thangesh with him in 1991. At this time, a plan was being formulated by Suban to attack the troops coming from Kondachi in the Silapathurai. Seeing Thangesh´s skillful actions, he sent Thangesh as the leader of a group for this attack.
Thangesh did not fail to show his skills in this attack either. He was injured in this attack. Later, in 1992, he was transferred to another department by the Mannar District Special Commander. His skills were also revealed and developed here. He displayed his skills and received the praise of his superiors and grew a step. After that, Thangesh asks permission from the commander to go on the offensive, with the aim of driving the enemy away from the border.
Due to his constant insistence, his brother Yan, who was the then Mannar District Special Commander, placed him in charge of certain teams in the attack group. It was at this time that the Poonagari “Thavalay Paichal” was planned, and the attack was successfully carried out. In this attack, Thangesh moved his teams very effectively and accelerated the attacks, but he was injured by the enemy’s attack.
Later in 1994, Thangesh was placed as the second in charge of the District Intelligence Team by the District Special Commander. Not only in attacks, but also in intelligence work, he went near the enemy’s garrisons and spied. Later, he was selected as the bodyguard of the District Special Commander. After this, the Special Commander allowed him to lead many attacks and carry out attacks.
Accordingly, he also successfully completed many attacks. It was during this time that the Sinhalese government in the Yarlpanam Peninsula planned and carried out Operation Suryakathir, with the aim of genocide. He was given the responsibility of leading a team in the counter-offensive against this military operation. He accepted it with great pleasure and did not allow the enemy to advance in the area given to him and kept him under his control. Even though he was wounded in the head in the previous Operation Thunder, he did not give up. With that injury, he was seen performing his duties despite the rain, thinking that his people should be liberated, and his land should not be lost.
This is the time when an unbearable sorrow awaited us. On 10.11.1995, Thangesh´s voice is screaming. ‘Kalo Thangesh’ Thangesh speaks. At that time, the enemy increases his attack. Thangesh says urgently and in his unwavering voice. ‘When I´m still alive, the enemy will not be able to move even an inch. Nothing else. Thank you. Out.’ is the only answer he got from Thangesh. After that, Thangesh gives orders and attacks the enemy, repelling the enemy’s attacks. At this time, an enemy projectile that came from somewhere falls near Thangesh and explodes. At that very place, Thangesh silently kisses this sacred land. He became maveeran for the land he loves and for the people.
Thangesh is not dead. He has become history.
