June 10, 1990 – A Stained Page in the History of Sammanthurai
Even when history attempts to forget certain days, the blood that was shed and the tears that were cried on those days remain before us as scars that never fade. One such tragic day is June 10, 1990.
On that day, in the Sammanthurai area, a brutal attack was carried out against Tamil civilians by Muslim armed groups, allegedly with the cooperation of the security forces. This attack, directed against innocent and unprotected civilians, represented the height of organized violence.
During the attack, 37 Tamil civilians were reportedly killed in a particularly brutal manner, being shot and hacked to death by members of these armed groups. The attack did not merely claim lives.
Many innocent people were seriously injured and forced to carry the physical and emotional scars for the rest of their lives. At the same time, their homes, property, and possessions—the very foundations of their livelihoods—were destroyed, leaving them destitute.
This event teaches us one important lesson: when innocent civilians become victims of ethnic conflict, the history of an entire community is wounded. Such massacres and acts of violence must not be erased from historical records.
Today, it is our duty to remember those souls, as well as all those who lost their lives on that soil on that day. The truth must not be obscured; it must be preserved and spoken of as history.
