23.05.2008 – School students and 16 people were killed by the Sri Lankan Army’s deep penetration attack team led by Lalith Jayasinghe on the Murigandi-Akkarayan road.

The dead included students and civilians. Those who say that it is wrong to write with disrespect about the person, who carried out this attack, should ask their conscience, after reading the post below.

The Sri Lankan Army’s deep penetration attack teams dominated the forests in Vanni in 2008. The situation was not the same in 2008 as in 1998 and 1999. It was a time when many civilians were being killed in the attacks of the LRRP (Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol) or Deep Penetration Unit (DPU).

The loss of Colonel Charles, a key commander of the LTTE, is an important one. This was the beginning of 2008. Not only the LTTE but also many people including passengers on buses, motorbikes and ambulances were killed in these attacks.

Lalith Jayasinghe, who was not only the officer in charge of the attack but also directly involved in the attacks in the forests in Vanni, was injured in a counterattack by the LTTE in the Oddusuttan forest area of Mullaithivu in November 2008 and was killed during the attack the next day.

His body and the other fighters were rescued by the Air Force using an MJ helicopter. Earlier, an LRRP soldier was killed by an LTTE paramilitary force while attempting to attack the LTTE who were engaged in road security operations in the A9 Kokkavil area. He was wearing the LTTE uniform.

During the Jayasikuru conflict, a group led by Brigadier Jayam, one of the LTTE commanders, had carried out harassing attacks (after mid-1997) to prevent the advance of the Sri Lankan troops.

Although other groups were also involved, Brigadier Jayam’s group, centered in the Vavuniya district, had carried out continuous attacks in Vadakattu Puliyankulam, Puliyankulam Kandiveethi, Ilamaruthankulam, Semamadu, Chinna Poovarasankulam, and Nainamadu, thus restricting the supply of supplies that would have facilitated the advance of the army.

While the army had captured Mankulam, Iranai Iluppaikulam was still under the control of the LTTE. Most of the forests of the Vanni were under the control of the LTTE. It can be said that this was a very favorable situation for the LTTE at that time.

Until the start of operation “Oyaatha Alaigal – 3” on 2 November 1999, the LTTE’s attacks on the supply lines of the Sri Lankan army were periodic.

For the LTTE, the Vanni’s security was its rivers, the forests that flow through them, and the ponds that extend beyond the forests. Whoever controls the rivers controls the forests. Whoever controls the forests controls the ponds. Whoever controls the ponds controls the land and resources. The LTTE’s training camps, farms, and warehouses were located especially near the ponds.

During the final war, all the dams of the ponds had become the defenses of the Sri Lankan army. Just as the LTTE had attacked against the Jayasikuru attack, the army’s infiltration attacks during the final war were carried out in the same way.

This was carried out by eight-man teams capable of infiltration attacks in the style of the LTTE until the end of 2008. Not only were the LTTE’s supplies restricted, but many attacks were carried out to the point of stopping the movement of people.

In addition, the soldiers were very difficult to identify because they were wearing LTTE uniforms. This had become a major challenge for the Vanni itself. It can also be noted that Tamil-speaking paramilitary groups were present with the people up to Mullivaikkal.

The main road (from Murigandi to Panikankulam, Puliyankulam main road, Kanagarayankulam main road, Puthuvettuvan road, Murigandi – Akkarayan road, Ambalaperumal – Mallavi road, Anavilundan 8th bridge, Thunukkai – Vellangulam road, Nedunkerni – Puliyankulam road, Ottusuddan Puthukudiyuruppu road) had gradually started to become dangerous roads.

Many civilians were being killed in the Claymore attacks.

In 2008, when the civilian population was in a state of fear just to travel, the airstrikes by the Sri Lankan army also increased.

Bharathipuram is one of the villages that developed after the peace period. On 23.05.2008, the village itself was destroyed.

An attack by the Sri Lankan Deep Penetration Attack Team on Akkarayan Murigandi took place on the road. 16 people, including six schoolchildren from the Bharathipuram area of Kilinochchi, were killed. I am uploading the photographs of the incident here.

The attack took place on the Gayas vehicle that was coming from the Akkarayan side towards Murigandi. The last rites of the sixteen people were held at the Bharathipuram Mahavidyalaya. It was not just the fighters who were attacked, but also innocent people and students were targeted in many areas. How can the attacker be covered with military honors?

The one who attacks people is not a hero, he is a coward!
