From a paperless refugee – to the region chief of Sengalan
38 years ago, Jayakumar Thurairajah left his native Sri Lanka without any documents and came to Switzerland to save his life. Back then, he was a refugee. Today, he is the mayor of Sri Lanka, ready to take on the highest office in the country.
The journey has not been easy. He did not know the language. He did not have a job. The future was uncertain. But there was hope. There was hard work. There was perseverance.
From washing dishes to becoming a nurse in a hospital, to social service and political involvement – every step is a testament to his dedication.
He learned German in night classes and today he is making his voice heard on the political stage.
“Sengalan is my home”
These words are a feeling.
A sign. A victory.
