24.03.1990 – The Indian Army left the homeland of Tamileelam
The Indian government carried out a deliberate propaganda campaign that “18 Indian soldiers who were being held as prisoners of war were tied up, tires were put on their bodies and burned alive by the LTTE.” Radio and television are leading the way in portraying the LTTE as cruel.
But what happened? The LTTE exposed India’s false face.
In November 1987, the LTTE released all 18 Indian soldiers in the presence of world journalists. Indian officials were stunned, not knowing how the LTTE had entered the city of Yarlpanam, which was under the control of the Indian army.
Indian officials told journalists not to ask any questions of the released Indian soldiers. But the LTTE interrupted and said, “Ask them if we tortured them.” One of the captured Indian soldiers, Wamansiti, said, “Nothing like that happened. We were treated very well.”
The LTTE gave the journalists some photographs of Indian military atrocities, said goodbye, and disappeared as mysteriously as they had come.
When the LTTE disappeared, the Indian officials threatened the journalists, “Give us back the photographs or we will not allow you to come to Sri Lanka again.” The journalists left with no choice but to return the photographs.
When the soldiers of the occupying force who had massacred their people were captured, the LTTE treated them with the respect due to prisoners of war. Upholding their culture. However, the Indian army’s treacherous assassination of a LTTE hero (Lt. Col. Johnny) who had gone as an ambassador has been etched in Tamil history as an unhealed scar.
