Uruthirapuram is a village located in the Karaichi Divisional Secretariat in Kilinochchi District in the Northern Province of Sri Lanka.

The village is known as Uruthirapuram or Uruthirapuriswaram. The village is divided as Uruthirapuram West, Uruthirapuram East, Puthumurippu Sivanagar, Sakthipuram. The beauty green fields shows up everywhere in the village. The water from Iranaimadu fills these fields. Uruthirapuram is a religious village that has a good relation to both religion, Saivam and Catholic.

It is one of the oldest Tamil villages with prehistoric and Cholar archeological places. The village gives good education to kids and produce athletes. The village has the pride of having excellent kabaddi and football players in the national team of Sri Lanka.

People living in this village at that time displaced from here due to the war and colonization of the Portuguese, the Dutch and then the British. Temples here went aground without care.

There is a statue of Nadarajar found in the Colombo Archaeological Museum from around 1976. It said this statue is from back 2nd century and was found at the Uruthrapuriswarar Temple complex in Kilinochchi. It said, that the statue have been removed and hidden in the 1980s. However, the existence of the Uruthrapuriswarar Shiva Temple in Kilinochchi centuries ago is historically confirmed.

The ruins of the temple was discovered by the Governor of Jaffna in the time of British colonization on September 2nd, 1882 and revealed to the Tamil people.

The temple was discovered in the forest of Uruthirapurakulam with the help of the people in the area. The temple was documented and the history of the temple was revealed.

Kilinochchi Uruthrapuriswaram is one of the oldest Shiva temples on the island of Sri Lanka. The temple is a historical testimony to the existence and antique of the local Tamil Shaiva community over several thousand years ago. The places of worships tells about the people and the history of the place. This temple is currently been renovated and the worship of it is being held.

There are villages in Kilinochchi that date back to BC. But in the government documents it said the settlement in the district of Kilinochchi took place in 1953. It is our duty to preserve the historical aspects of the Tamils.

Uruthirapuram is still a village of great historical and archeological significance and it is necessary to know and preserve its history.
