The first to raise the banner of revolution against the European colonialism / occupation within the Asian continent was Poolithevan, the Tamil Nerkattumseval governor.

During the 17 years from 1751, Poolithevan formed a coalition and fought the occupation forces from the Nawab and the British Empire. Poolithevan defeated the English general; Guinness in 1751 and in 1755, defeated the English commanding officer; Colonel Heron.

Yusuf Khan (formerly known as Maruthanayakam), popularly known as Kankasip, was the commander for the English Company and fought for three years to subdue Poolithevan.  In May 1765, the English’s Colonel Donald Campbell attacked Poolithevan’s Vasu Deva-nallur fort. However Poolithevan was able to courageously evaded capture and headed to the western mountain range.

Poolithevan was betrayed and captured by the British. On the way to Palayankottai, Poolithevan miraculously disappeared.
