TOWARDS OUR PLACES – Malvil

Malvil is a place in the Kilinochchi District of the North of Eelam. The village is in the place of Pachchilaippalli area. The Krishna Temple in the area is a place, which people of this town and people from Vadamaradchchi in Jaffna worship. The “theertha” festival of the temple takes place on the Uduthurai beach. People of the two districts see Malvil as the spiritual place.

In the historical books of “Ithihasam” it said, that the legend Raman came to Sri Lanka during the time of Ravanan. When Raman was thirsty and needed water, he placed his bow in this village and the village was named “Vimmal” (Villu – the bow). Later Vimmal became Malvil. The Malvil pond is the evidence of this. The pond always has water in it.

The main water sources of the village are Malvil Pond, Kondavil Pond and Kaluvil Pond. The people of this village are cultivating 450 acres of coconut and 10 acres of rice with the water resources of the village. This village is said to be the best of cultivating raisins.

Iyakkachchi and the surrounding villages are the hometowns of the ancient Tamils. Kuveni and Ravanan are related to the Iyakkar clan. History says that the ancient as Valliyakkan worshiped the Krishna Temple here. It is nothing than true that the Aariya people and the Sinhala people are slowly destroying our Tamil cultural values.

Malvil and Iyakkachchi are the places that are mostly talked about during the liberation struggle. The Malvil was in good development after the LTTE captured Elephant Pass. However, the village was again affected by the war in 2008 and is now slowly recovering.
