Today marks Memorial Day is of the Sencholai Massacre. On 14.08.2006 at ‘Sencholai’ located in Vallipunam, Mullaithivu District, 53 female students were massacred during a bomb blast attack by the Sri Lankan Air Force.
We offer hour tearful tribute to those children and the general public.
Mullaithivu, Vallipunam: Sencholai Massacre – 14th of August 2006
Days prior on the 10th of August 2006, First Aid Training Course was held at Sencholai located in Vallipunam, Puthukkudiyiruppu, Mullaithivu, providing first response training to upper level students from Killinochchi and Mullaithivu Districts.
Following the training as students continued about their day, 4 KFir aircrafts belonging to Sri Lankan Air Force carried out indiscriminate air attacks on Sencholai on the 14th of August 2006 at 7:30 AM. In this attack killed 54 persons, including 52 students and 2 staff members. 130 students were seriously injured and several students sustained minor injuries. Of these injured students, three has to have their legs amputated and one student lost an eye.
Three more students were sent to Kandy Hospital from Mullaithivu Hospital for additional treatment. Upon their arrival these three students were arrested by Sri Lanka’s Terrorism Investigation Department. The three students were released after being detained and were brought to Vavuniya Hospital to be subsequently released to their homes in Vanni. One of the three students injured students died in Vavuniya following their release. The other two students were immediately taken back to Kandy Hospital. After a few months the status of the children became unknown and only their parents were able to visit them at a predetermined location and know where they were staying. The two students were detained for almost two years without any charges, an unexplainable situation for the parents.
