Vadamaradchi A few days after the “Liberation Operation” Ranjan

Vadamaradchi A few days after the “Liberation Operation” Major Ranjan stood in the middle of the bunker of leaves of panai tree. He cannot run anymore. On all four sides the green armies were closing in. The people standing inside the bunker of panai leaves stood around, leaving Ranjan in the middle. After conducting the usual questioning-torture, the soldiers walked away.

If Ranjan had known from there that day, many lives might have been lost in that bunker of leaves too. Ranjan was saved that day as the people valued the life of a freedom fighter more than their own. On that day, Ranjan said to himself: This life is given by people to me. I will live and die for the liberation of these people. Hearing his decision, some waves rose in the sea and crashed on the shore.

During (Liberation Operation) and when the Indian Army occupied this land, Ranjan stayed in Vadamaradchi region. It was the people who sheltered Ranjan and his companions during the day and nights. After the withdrawal of the Indian Army and the start of the war with Sri Lanka, Ranjan worked day and night to build strong freedom fighters. After that he and the companions he brought up stood around and protected the people of Vadamaradchi.

Ranjan is a competent warrior, a lighthearted fighter. His heart smelted when he sees kids and elders. Sometimes his vehicle hesitated for some time on the wet roads. Immediately kids will around him screaming “uncle.”  He doubts if he should talk to them or pick up the buried vehicle? He hesitates. All the elder women hug and kiss him. The kids laugh.  Ranjan will say “we are dying for this smile to become permanent”. True, it was because they welcomed death daily that they gained life in death – they died for others to live.

A second attack attempt on the fort army camp. Ranjan was the leader of the team who had to enter the gate of the fort. The attack began. Ranjan and his companions advanced. At one point, Ranjan’s gun was broken. Carrying the gun of a fallen freedom fighter, Ranjan climbed the fort wall. But there was no one to come with him. All the way forward, all who came with him, they fell dying and wounded. That day the LTTE retreated.

After a few days the siege of the fort was successful. Ranjan built a fort in his camp. In it, he recorded every freedom fighter who fell in the fort as a picture. He wanted to wake up seeing them every day. The mind became more and more determined. (To attack. To siege the arms.) That thought came and went in the night.

Silavatura Army Camp Attack

Ranjan was one of those tasked with taking over the small army camp. A few minutes passed after the attack began. The guard post between the two army camps is captured by the LTTE. Ranjan took the light machine gun from that guard post. The machine gun started hurling towards the army. At the same time, a soldier’s gunshots hit Ranjan’s body.

Today, on the land where Ranjan lived as a freedom fighter, there is a children’s park named after him. Ranjan and his comrades stand in silhouette recalling. During the bright mornings and dark rainy evenings, all the little kids look at their beloved “uncle” and talk with him. They talk about his ideals. They will become the freedom fighters of tomorrow’s nation, just like “uncle´s” dream.
