Unlike stonecrafting which is limited due to availability of good quality stone, getting good quality wood has never been a problem for Tamil woodworkers. As such there are many centers of excellence for good woodcraft in Tamil Nadu.
Madurai has some of the most beautiful examples of carved rosewood artwork seen anywhere. The work is intricate and bold, with extreme attention to detail. Rosewood is used here both in furniture and in statues, toys and decorative items.
Virudunagar, Devakottai, Karaikkudi, Nagarcoil and Suchindram are also havens of wooden artwork. Rosewood, sandalwood and local woods are used to produce wood panels, statues, idols, furniture, household implements, toys etc.
