Name – Pethuru Sakayasili Hometown – Atkattiveli, Mannar The first female combatant to rise as a symbol of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam’s armed struggle embraced martyrdom by ingesting cyanide before losing consciousness during the first encounter with the Indian Peacekeeping Force (IPKF), which was actively committing war crimes against the indigenous Tamils of Tamil Eelam, in the Kopai region of Jaffna.
Her martyrdom is commemorated annually as Tamil Eelam Women’s Uprising Day. The emergence of female LTTE fighters, a turning point in the history of the Tamil Eelam liberation struggle. In tribute to her legacy, the first traditional women’s brigade of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam bore her name.
