The Jaffna University Students’ Union has stated that Sri Lanka’s Independence Day

The Jaffna University Students’ Union has stated that Sri Lanka’s Independence Day should be declared as Black Day. Representatives of the University Students’ Union made the statement while participating in a media briefing held at the Jaffna University.

“The Tamil people in Sri Lanka have been continuously fighting to maintain their identity. We are declaring February 4th, Sri Lanka’s Independence Day, as Black Day and informing the public of this as a declaration covering the North and East.”

The rights and resources of the Tamil people continue to be violated. The rulers change from time to time. But no solution has been proposed for the Tamil people to date.

They are continuing the reconciliation process for the Tamil people at the level of talks. The Sinhalese parties are not ready to achieve a solution for the Tamil people.

Northeastern University students, civil society, social activists, religious leaders and all trade unions should support the declaration of Independence Day as a Black Day for Tamils.

The Sri Lankan government is actively working to destroy the struggle for the rights of the Tamils.

The Security Act has been passed. This government has taken away the freedom of the media in this country, even the freedom of expression of a common man.

The government is acting with a long-term view by implementing laws that suppress those who fight for rights.

The political solution for the Tamils, the release of political prisoners, the issue of the disappeared, the illegal settlement projects in the North-East, and the planned Buddhistization will never stop!

It is a historical fact that we must continue to struggle until we find a solution for ourselves.

Moreover, The Black Day is also appropriate for the Sinhalese people. Today, laws are being made against the Sinhalese people. All parties should understand this.

At the same time, the government should focus on getting us a permanent political solution, based on which the 13th Amendment is neither the starting point nor the ending point for the Tamils.

We can never accept the 13th. Therefore, we will not abandon our struggles or forms of struggle until we find a permanent solution to the Tamil problem, the university said.
