Michael Vasanthi’s, was born in Nelliyadi, Vadamarachchi in Jaffna District, and was a medical student at the University of Jaffna. She joined the LTTE in 1984 and trained at the first training camp. She was a medical officer and commander in the LTTE regiment. Lt. Colonel in Mannar witnessed many domains, from the first female LTTE offensive led by Victor to attacks on the Indian Army.
She felt ill on a Christmas day while in the jungles of Manalaru and died on 11.01.1990. The Women’s Brigade “Sothiya Regiment’ was formed in her name on 14.07.1996.
It excelled in all subsequent domains. The battalion had lost about five hundred fighters to date. In the history of the Tamil Eelam struggle, the personality and skills of Major Sothiya were the basis for the development of the Women’s Regiment to this day.
