Kannadasan

Kannadasan (June 24, 1927 – October 17, 1981) was a Tamil film songwriter and poet. Author of more than 4,000 poems, more than 5,000 film songs, novels and essays. He was the editor of Chandamarutham, Thirumakal, Thirai Oli, Thenral, Thenralthirai, Mullai and Kannadasan magazines. He was the “royal poet” of the state of Tamil Nadu. He is a recipient of the Sahitya Akademi Award.

Biography
Kannadasan’s given name is Muthiah. He was born in Sirukoodalpatti, near Karaikudi in Tamil Nadu, into Hinduism, in the Chettiar tradition of his merchant. He has 10 siblings. At a young age, he was adopted by Sikappu Achchi (died 25-12-1958) for 7000 rupees. He lived at home under the name of Narayanan. He completed his primary education at Sirukoodalpatti and Amravatiputhur High School up to eighth standard. Joined Ajax, Tiruvottiyur in 1943. Kannadasan was the nickname he used when he went to work as a newspaper editor.

Family
Kannadasan’s first marriage was to Ponnammal alias Ponnazhaki (died: May 31, 2012) on February 9, 1950 in Karaikudi. They have 4 sons Kanmanisuppu, Kalaivanan, Ramasamy and Venkatachalam and 3 daughters Alamelu Sokkalingam, Thenammai and Visalachchi. Kannadasan married Parvati for the second time on November 11, 1951. They have 5 sons Gandhi, Kamal, Annathurai, Gopala Krishnan and Srinivasan and 2 daughters Revathi and Kalaichelvi. At the age of fifty, he married Bulwar Valliyamai. They have a daughter named Vishali.

He is very much involved in the poetry of Gambhir and the songs of Bharatiyar. He has Bharathiyar as his psychic guru.

Political involvement
Kannadasan, who was in Anna’s Dravida Kazhagam, left the party on April 9, 1961 due to differences of opinion.

Death
He was admitted to Chicago City Hospital on July 24, 1981 due to poor health and died on Saturday, October 17 at 10.45am Indian time. His body was brought to Chennai from the United States on October 20 and cremated on October 22 with state honors after the funeral of millions of people.
