Liberation Operation (26.5.1987)
This was the first major military operation against Tamil people in the history of the Tamil Eelam struggle. More than 8000 troops surrounded the small area of Vadamaradchchi, more than 100 heavy military vehicles, several helicopters, bombers and the Sri Lankan Navy.
More than 800 people were killed and more than a hundred people were injured. More than 15000 people were evacuated and became homeless.
Up to 200 freedom fighters took part in the march under the guidance of the national leader V. Prabhakaran. 8 fighters became heroes at the first battle.
