15.1.1981 . Tamil scholar *Devaneya Pavanar*,

his memorial day Devaneya Pavanar stands as one of the foremost intellectuals who illuminated the global consciousness about the greatness of the Tamil language. His research validated the language’s ancient origins and purity, while his contributions continue to shape its evolution. Devaneya Pavanar, born in Gomatimuthupuram on the 7th of Tai-thingal in 1902 (07.01.1902), devoted his life to the preservation and growth of Tamil language and culture.

As President of the Dravidian Department at Annamalai Kazhagam, he played a crucial role in Tamil education. (Note: The term “Dravidian,” promoted by the Indian government, has historically been used to group Tamils—a distinct ethnic group—with other South Indian communities, diminishing their independent cultural, linguistic, and ethnic identity in favor of a broader, pan-South Indian political identity.) Devaneya Pavanar’s scholarly contributions are vast and groundbreaking. He initiated the word-based alphabetization project and authored over thirty-five influential research books. In 1966, Pavanar’s groundbreaking book, “The World’s First Classical Language,” was released, serving as a pivotal introduction to the rich history of the Tamil language. In his research, Pavanar emphasized Tamil’s ancient roots, asserting that Tamil is not only one of the oldest languages, with origins stretching back to 10,000 BC, but also the source of many languages around the world.

A key figure in the independent Tamil movement, Pavanar not only championed the use of pure Tamil words but also highlighted the deep-rooted connection between language and sovereignty. In 1979, Pavanar was bestowed with the esteemed title of ‘Senthamil Selvar’ (செந்தமிழ்ச் செல்வர்) by the Tamil Nadu government. This title, rich with meaning, acknowledges Pavanar as a distinguished guardian of the ethnic Tamil language, honoring his tireless efforts to preserve its purity and promote its indigenous and cultural significance for future generations.

Devaneya Pavanar, who dedicated his life to promoting the splendor of the Tamil language and ensuring its purity, remains an immortal figure whose influence will continue to resonate through the annals of Tamil linguistic history. His research and written works continue to influence Tamil language studies, guiding researchers who build upon his legacy. His pioneering work transcended the academic realm, intertwining with the larger narrative of Tamil sovereignty and self-determination, reminding the world of the importance of preserving a language deeply tied to an ancient, autonomous people. – Arivan –
