Name: Balasekaran Kandiah

Hometown: Kokkuthuvai, Mullaitivu The very mention of Balraj’s name was enough to strike fear into the Sri Lankan army. Praised as ‘a better fighter than me’ by the national leader of Tamil Eelam, he commanded the Charles Antony Regiment, the first traditional regiment established by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. He was a strategist par excellence, known for meticulously planning, executing, and achieving success in his attacks. Balraj’s true potential came to light during the conflict with the Indian army, ironically referred to as the ‘Peace Keeping’ force. His fearless operation against the Elephant Pass military base in 2000 cemented his popularity among the people.

His courage and tactical brilliance were undeniable, but it was his deep, unwavering love for his fellow fighters that truly set him apart. He was not just a leader; he was a protector, always ensuring his comrades were well cared for and supported. His commitment to their welfare transcended the battlefield, earning him an admiration that extended beyond respect. To his fighters, he was a brother, a guardian, and a figure they would follow into any battle, not out of duty, but out of genuine affection and loyalty. He died in 2008 after a prolonged struggle with ill health, but his legacy as a commander, protector, and symbol of selfless leadership continues to live on through the many lives he impacted.
