Captain Pandithar (Ilango) Chinnathurai Ravindran

25.12.1959 Martyrdom: 09.01.1985 In a recent battle, Sri Lankan

Captain Pandithar (Ilango) Chinnathurai Ravindran Kambarmalai, Valvettithurai, Yāḻppāṇam (Jaffna) Birth of a Hero: 25.12.1959 Martyrdom: 09.01.1985 In a recent battle, Sri Lankan forces launched an assault on the Tamil Eelam’s military base in the Awarangal area of Yāḻppāṇam, (Jaffna) marking a tragic chapter in the resistance against the invasion. The brave soldiers of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam embraced martyrdom while defending their land against the Sinhalese army’s siege.

Captain P. Ravindran (Pandithar), one of the key military leaders of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, died a martyr’s death on 9th January 1985 in the village of Achuveli, situated in Yāḻppāṇam (Jaffna), as he fought bravely to protect Tamil Eelam from the invading Sinhalese forces. A sudden attack by a large number of Sinhala army soldiers led to the encirclement of one of our key military bases in Atchuveli, as the forces of occupation sought to quash the struggle for Tamil Eelam. Following this encirclement, a fierce battle erupted between our freedom fighters and the Sinhala army at the Atchuveli base. In the prolonged conflict, Captain Ravindran fought valiantly until the very end, ultimately sacrificing his life for the cause of Tamil Eelam’s liberation. Captain Ravindran was martyred along with four young fighters, while the others, undeterred, broke the siege and made their escape, vowing to fight on for the cause of Tamil Eelam’s freedom.

Captain Ravindran was a senior member in the Central Committee of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, entrusted with the critical duties of managing the finances and maintaining the weapons of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, ensuring the military’s readiness and effectiveness in the struggle for Tamil Eelam independence. Captain Ravindran, born in Kambarmalai near Valvettithurai, was 24 years old when he became a member of the armed forces of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam in 1977.. With his strong sense of duty and commitment to the movement, he worked tirelessly to support the growth of Tamil Eelam’s armed forces, winning the admiration and affection of his comrades. Captain Ravindran had a close and loyal relationship with V. Prabhakaran, the leader of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, and was his trusted right hand.

In addition to his administrative role, Captain Ravindran was actively involved in tactical military operations, playing a significant part in the armed resistance for Tamil Eelam. The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam commemorate this valiant martyr, who gave his life in service to the liberation and sovereignty of the Tamil people of Eelam; Captain Pandithar. The Sinhala government has unleashed a distorted propaganda campaign about the Achhuveli attack, attempting to manipulate the narrative surrounding the military actions of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. In their distorted claims of victory, the Sinhala government alleges that they have destroyed the military command of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam and eliminated the armed struggle itself. This is a complete fabrication. We want to make this point clear:

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam have numerous well-established military bases within Tamil Eelam, each playing a critical role in the defense of the nation. The target of the siege was a small tactical base in Achuveli, that is a part of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam’s military network. A force of over 500 soldiers, equipped with heavy artillery, unexpectedly encircled the 15 soldiers of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. During this battle, 10 combatants of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam showed exceptional courage, breaking the siege and making their escape, a feat worthy of recognition as a significant military success. The Sinhala army, having failed to capture the troops of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, arrested 50 innocent civilian youths in Achuveli, branded them as combatants, and declared their fabricated ‘victory’. Through this false and harmful propaganda, the Sri Lankan government intends to demoralize the Tamil people while uplifting the Sinhalese armed forces. The Sinhalese government will soon learn, in the face of unwavering resolve, that no deceitful propaganda can destroy the Tamil people’s undying determination to their struggle for freedom and the establishment of Tamil Eelam.
