Today is the day of remembrance for the heroic Naval Karumpuli martyrs during a fuel supply operation. During the supply mission on November 2, 2000, intended to deliver essential fuel through international waters to the Mullaitivu base for the success of Operation “Unceasing Waves – 03,” several Karumpuli martyrs embraced heroic death in a direct confrontation with the Sri Lankan Navy. These included Karumpuli Lieutenant Colonel Kathirgamaroopan (Pettha), Karumpuli Lieutenant Colonel Salman (Irumporai), Karumpuli Major Ilakkiyan, Karumpuli Major Kumaravel,Karumpuli Major Sathasivam, and Karumpuli Captain Vallavan.
The success of Operation “Unceasing Waves – 03,” which brought global attention to the Tamil struggle, was a result of the relentless efforts of various Liberation Tigers units, who performed their duties with dedication and tireless commitment. Behind this victory lies the valorous work of the naval units and Karumpuli members, whose bravery enabled the fuel supply mission essential to the military campaign.
In this mission, the Karumpuli unit, entrusted by the Tamil Eelam National Leader Hon. V. Prabhakaran, took on the responsibility to transport a substantial amount of fuel directly from international waters to the Mullaitivu Sea Tigers’ base. The boat ”Pazhani”, designed by the Sea Tigers to carry fuel, was deployed by the Karumpuli unit to complete this task. However, on November 2, 2000, as the “Pazhani” vessel was returning to the Mullaitivu base with its fuel cargo, it encountered enemy forces, sparking a fierce sea battle.
In this extensive battle, the Karumpuli fighters displayed unparalleled valor and sacrifice. For the cause of liberation, Karumpuli Lieutenant Colonel Kathirgamaroopan (Pettha), Karumpuli Lieutenant Colonel Salman (Irumporai), Karumpuli Major Ilakkiyan, Karumpuli Major Kumaravel, Karumpuli Major Sathasivam, and Karumpuli Captain Vallavan etched an unforgettable heroic tale, becoming everlasting warriors of pride.
We remember these Naval Karumpuli martyrs and their sacrifices in this fuel supply mission, which contributed strength to the cause of liberation, and honor their memory in our hearts.
