A manpaanai is a clay vessel traditionally used for storing water and other ingredients. It typically features a rounded shape with a hollow interior, a base (either flat or rounded), a narrow neck, and a small opening.
The mansatti is another type of clay vessel, primarily used for cooking. It features a wider opening compared to the manpaanai.
Potters craft manpaanai by hand on a spinning wheel, shaping the clay into its desired form. Beyond storage, manpaanai serve as decorative pieces and are even used as the “kadam,” a musical instrument in Carnatic music.
