The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) is a militarily effective and strong fighting force. It has adapted itself to incorporate military principles comparable to the military structure of a nation.
LTTE, which has incomparable manpower and military control, has been achieving impressive battlefield victories against the three forces in Sri Lanka. It demonstrated its strength in the battlefields prior to this ceasefire agreement to disable the Sri Lankan military machinery. The basis for the LTTE to achieve such a high level militarily is its military structure. The formation of the LTTE’s brigades and their effective operations gain importance. The Jayanthan Brigade takes pride of place among the brigades that strengthened the traditional military capabilities of the LTTE.
Generally, it is very rare for a traditional brigade to achieve high-level results in its initial battlefields. But for the Jayanthan Brigade, it is surprising that it has shown itself to be a highly effective and highly combat-ready in its first battle.
The fighting teams that had reached the peak of a hand-to-hand organization in the Batticaloa-Ampara war zone were brought together by the leadership for the Poonahari ‘Thavalai’ operation. The new environment, new regimental structure, military procedures, and careful training required them to adapt to a different operational environment. Those fighters, who had acquired sufficient knowledge of the most difficult situations and circumstances a fighter could face, had no problem adapting themselves to this new practical environment.
From the time of the formation of the Jayanthan Brigade, we can observe that the “fighter mentality” or “team spirit” was at an advanced level in the brigade. Its “extremely aggressive actions” and “fighting spirit” on the battlefields were identified as the unique characteristics of the brigade.
It is noteworthy that the Jayanthan Brigade was capable of fighting in any formation, had extensive knowledge and qualifications, which further strengthened its combat capability.
It is worth noting that the terrain of the Maddu-Amparai war zone had given them the knowledge and experience to operate in any terrain such as forests, mountains, and open spaces. The Jayanthan Brigade demonstrated its ability to engage in water-related operations in the very first battle. The above-mentioned favorable factors later helped the unit to operate effectively in the Jaffna Peninsula, the forests of Vanni mainland.
Following the Poonahari operation, the Jayanthan Brigade, which participated in all the significant battlefields of the Jaffna Peninsula and further developed its combat capabilities, continued to prove its uniqueness in each field. After the Tamileelam Liberation War centered on Vanni mainland, it had developed into a very powerful brigade when a new battlefield was opened in Vanni mainland with “Oyatha Alaikal”.
The Jayanthan Brigade continued to play an important role in the military advances and breakthroughs in Vanni mainland. In the year 1997 this brigade began to be heard not only in the country but also in the countries of the world. When the “Jayasikkuru” operation, which was the largest military operation in the history of the Sri Lankan military, began, the Jayanthan Brigade was a major force in the strategy devised by our national leader to counter it. The Jayanthan Brigade took the lead in both long defensive battles and intense offensives for years.
In Vanni battlefield, the Jayanthan Brigade, which was engaged in conventional military operations such as defensive warfare, counter-proliferation, and heavy attacks, also carried out unconventional operations. In the form of small group operations, the Jayanthan Brigade units continued to operate in Vanni battlefield in deep insight and attack. These operations, combined with special investigation teams, also yielded significant valuable results. Such teams also added strength to the deep insight and operation during the “Oyatha Alaikal – 3”. It is noteworthy that Jayanthan’s fighters and commanders worked together in the special offensive operations carried out by the Karumpulikal teams.
The Jayanthan Brigade fought simultaneously on several fronts in the Jayasikuru counter-battle, which was described by the national leader as the “mother of all battles”, and in the massive offensive operations of “Oyatha Alaikal – 2” and Oyatha Alaikal – 3”, which demonstrated its strength and power. The Jayanthan Brigade continued to fight tirelessly in the battle for the Elephant Pass and the peninsula operations. The fact that the national leader, commenting on Jayasikuru among the fighters of the Jayanthan Brigade, later said, “You have achieved so much in this battle that you can say that this is your battle” is enough to realize the impact of the Jayanthan Brigade on Vanni battlefield.
Jayanthan Brigade was formed on 04.05.1993. The achievements in its 12-year relentless journey on the battlefield are not ordinary. The national leader mentioned in his congratulatory message about the role played by this brigade in this war of national liberation, which are very important records not only in the history of the Jayanthan Brigade but also in the history of our struggle.
“The Jayanthan Brigade has continuously attacked the enemy’s positions since its inception…. From guerrilla-style attacks to conventional warfare, the Jayanthan Brigade has performed well…. The fighters and commanders of this brigade are skilled in the art of warfare and are extremely brave. The enemy is afraid of their fighting qualities.” The national leader had mentioned this brigade.
When a great betrayal, unprecedented in our ideal journey, took place in the name of Karuna in Batticaloa, the way the Jayanthan Brigade faced it surpassed its past battlefield achievements. Regarding this, the national leader mentioned.
“The world witnessed the greatness and determination of the Jayanthan Brigade with its own eyes in the early part of last year. The bravery and principle shown by the Jayanthan Brigade when a great betrayal occurred against our struggle on the land of Batticaloa are always worthy of praise.”
The 12th anniversary celebrations of the brigade held in the Batticaloa area on 04.05.2005 demonstrated that the Jayanthan Brigade will always act in a manner becoming this inner expression of leadership. The sight of Jayanthan fighters marching majestically with the Tamileelam national flag flying high at the main base of Jayanthan Brigade, surrounded by forests, fields and mountains, would have sent a life-threatening message to the enemies and traitors.
