There is a place called Kovalan Pottal near Madurai Palanganatham. Archaeological excavations carried out by the Tamil Nadu Archaeological Survey in 1980 found the remains of an elderly man with bones, and excavations at the site revealed that the bones of a middle-aged man date back to 1800 years ago.
Sangam period coins, copper bracelets, pottery and stone tools found during the excavations are now on display at the Government Museum at Nayakar Mahal, Madurai.
The place where Kovalan died in Silappathikaram may have been this Kovalan pottal. Years later, the area is still known as Kovalan Pottal and has been a burial ground for a long time.
