Today is the Lt. Col. Ponnamman and other valiant martyrs lost their lives in a surprise explosion in Kaithadi, Yāḻppāṇam district (Jaffna). – Their martyrdom is remembered on this day, February 14, 1987. The fallen heroes, Colonel Ponnamman, Major Cadles (Thenmarachchi in-charge), Captain Vasu (technical unit head of the Liberation Armed Forces), Lt. Siddharthan, 2nd Lt. Baran, and Heroic Tigers (Veera vengai) ; Jokesh, Kumanan, Akbar, Kavar, and Devan, are remembered for their sacrifices. To avoid arousing the soldiers’ suspicion at the occupying Sri Lankan army camp entrance, a vehicle, designed to look like a water tanker used for delivering drinking water, was filled with explosives. – Just as the operation was nearing completion, water began leaking from the tanker, as they rushed to seal the leak, an unexpected blast claimed the lives of our heroes.
During that period, Amman worked with unwavering effort, to fortify the armed struggle movement, working hand in hand with our national leader, Prabhakaran. He started working with our leader in the mid-seventies and showcased immense courage and valor in several key operations, such as the Umayyalpuram and Tirunelveli counteroffensives.
To commemorate Ponnamman, who was in charge of our movement’s inaugural camp, the Lt. Col. Ponnamman Minesweeper Division was formed by the Honorable V. Prabhakaran, National Leader of Tamil Eelam. The one who organized art exhibitions in the camps, who made people laugh, and who constantly spread happiness, is no longer among us today. I can’t hold back my tears as I remember the song he’d always sing for his comrades, when they would ask, “Amman, sing a song.” How many comrades were nurtured by our Amman, who played the roles of friend, father, son, and mother to the people, always with a kind heart? Today, we, the youth, still carry his dream of self -determination and freedom of Tamil Eelam within us!
