LTTE confers Maamanithar award to stalwart at Niedharsanam

Leader of Liberation Tigers, V Pirapaharan conferred Maamanithar (Great Humanbeing) award to Mr V Satchithananthasivam (also known as Gnanatharan) a tamil activist, jounalist, political thinker, and later the key force behind the LTTE’s visual media division Niedharsanam. He was 65-years old when he died on Wednesday after a prolonged illness. Gnanatharan, who began his literary career as a novelist in 70s, directed the first short film in 1992 and the first full length film of Niedharsanam, LTTE media sources said. Gnanatharan was the Chief Advisor of the National Television of Tamileelam (NTT).

Gnanatharan, father of martyred Sea Tiger, Capt. Vanan Michael, has produced many visual media artists in his more than 15 year old service in Niedharsanam, according to Mr. Karunaharan, a director at the NTT Satelite Television in Vanni.

Gnanatharan was the main architect also behind the Oliveechu Video magazine and other video documenteries produced at the Nidharsanam media lab.

He has directed 4 short films and 3 full length films.

“Gnarathan was a multi-talented artist, was a painter, novelist and documentarian. His works have been appreciated by reputed South Indian film directors,” Karunaharan added.

A song, “Poovum Nadakkuthu Pinchum Nadakkuthu”, from one of his landmark full length film, Muhangal, won fifth place in the “Worlds Top Ten” in BBCs World Service in competition with 7000 songs from around the world.

Translated extracts from the Mamanithar award signed by LTTE leader on Friday follow:

“We have lost an exemplary human being who relentlessly fought for the freedom of Tamil people and the liberation of Tamil Nation. Today our nation is immersed in sorrow at his passing away.

“Pure at heart, scrupulously honest, simplicity was a born trait of Gnanatharan. Everyone was attracted to him for his love of fellowbeings.

“He struggled, carried immense burdens and worked day and night so that Tamil people could live with dignity and freedom, and can breathe the air of liberation. Working with people and fighters he persevered through war’s immense hardships.

“Gnanatharan served in different capacities in different divisions of our liberation movement. He is a precious literary gift from the soil of our land.

“Besides his penetrating writings to establish the justness of our struggle, he served as the main motivating force, and source of support and inspiration at Nitharsanam from its very beginning. He was instrumental in training our fighters in the technology of television and nurtured the institution which today serves globally to our diaspora with astounding success.

“His zealous enterprise to transcribe the achievements and sacrifices of our fighters in the battlefields of Vanni resulted in outstanding audio-visual products that preserve our history for posterity and helped to spread the message of Tamil peoples life, and struggle for justice, to the world.

“Celebrating his dedication and commitment to Tamil people’s freedom, and extolling his sacrifices to his people, I am proud to present this highest award from Our Movement, Maamanithar award, to Gnanatharan. Those who denounce worldly comforts and choose to resolutely work for the high ideal of liberation of their people, will always remain indelibly etched in the soul of our Nation.”
