“Mamanithar” Kumar Ponnambalam

“Mamanithar” Kumar Ponnambalam

It has been a year since Kumar Ponnambalam, who said, ‘I don’t know if they will leave me alive until the end of the year 2000,’ passed away. (Drawn in 2001) Let us take a moment to recall his memories. On 05.01.2000, when Kumar Ponnamplam was in his motorbike in Colombo, a gunman fired five bullets and took the life of Kumar Ponnampalam.

The Tamileelam patriot Kumar Ponnampalam had given steady replies to the anti-Tamil views of Sinhala nationalists. Everyone sorrowed his loss and remembered his contribution to the struggle, paid tribute to him and honored him. Tributes were held in Tamileelam and in the countries where Tamils live in the diaspora. Thousands of Tamils, ignoring the harassment of the soldiers, gathered in Colombo to pay their last respects to his greatness.

Above all, the Tamileelam National Leader Prabhakaran praised Kumar Ponnambalam’s courageous struggle and presented him with the highest award of “Mamanithar” and paid tribute to his national service. Living in the heartland of chauvinism, Kumar will surpass everyone in exposing the acts of state terrorism against the Tamil people and in casting light on the injustices being done to the Tamil nation.

When Sinhala politicians and sociologists spout racism against the Tamil nation, Kumar Ponnambalam will respond in strong words and throw his ideological bombs at them to destroy the ideological base of Sinhala chauvinism.

He also devoted most of his legal career to freeing Tamils imprisoned under apartheid laws. Kumar Ponnambalam handled the cases of 95 percent of Tamil political prisoners. He worked for free without charging any fees. He described it as his duty.

Racists tried many times to punish Kumar Ponnambalam for such pro-Tamil service. But Kumar Ponnambalam did not move. In contrast, he intensified his activities and reacted.

When he personally encountered the ‘pass’ system and the orders of the soldiers to roam around with identity cards that harassed Tamils in a manner contrary to the law, he refused to obey them and legally challenged those involved. Kumar Ponnambalam had the courage to say what needed to be said – when needed – without worrying about the external pressures – threats of death – and the courage to turn this courage into action.

When returning to Colombo after serving abroad in support of the Tamil struggle, he was shot dead by the Sri Lankan government’s treacherous conspiracy.

He patiently allowed himself to be humiliated in the name of being checked at the airport. Im not the fool who carries the documents that the authorities are looking for in my suitcase, he will say. He will mock the inspectors that they even not have the common sense that there are scientific methods to send those documents to the right place in the right way.

He will explain to world leaders about the birth of the armed struggle and its expected necessity. He will expose the human rights violations against the Tamil people and take them to international human rights organizations.

He will explain the contributions that the Tamils living in the diaspora should make to the struggle. He will give answers to the racist ideas of the chauvinists. Kumar Ponnampalam has been a role model for the intellectuals of our nation. He has shown his opposition not only to the Sinhala chauvinists but also against the Tamil groups that breed chauvinism.

A postage stamp was also released in memory of “Mamanithar” Kumar Ponnampalam by the people of Tamileelam living in Canada.

We pay our heroic tribute to Kumar Ponnampalam who fought politically for the liberation of the homeland of Tamileelam.

We will definitely continue to follow you until Tamileelam is achieved.
