Methods of Erecting Memorial Stones: Insights from Tholkappiyam
An exploration of the six segments mentioned in Tholkappiyam reveals the procedures involved in erecting memorial stones.
- (Katchi) The Search for the Stone: Those who wish to erect a memorial stone for a deceased warrior search for a suitable stone.
- (Kalkol) The Selection and Bringing of the Stone: After selecting the stone, they adorn it with garlands and offer liquor before bringing it. As they transport the stone, they do so to the accompaniment of drum music.
- (Neerppadai) Cooling the Stone and Inscription: Once the stone is brought, it is laid down in a water body to cool. After the stone’s heat dissipates, the name, clan, and cause of death of the deceased are inscribed on it.4.(Naduthal) Erecting the Stone: After shaping and inscribing the stone, a goat is sacrificed, and the stone is adorned with flowers and peacock feathers before being erected. Following this, a ritual offering of liquor is made.5.(Perumpadai) Building a Shelter and Worship: A shelter is constructed over the erected stone, and it is worshipped.6.(Vaalthal) Reverence and Transformation into a Temple: The descendants and the erectors of the stone worship it. Eventually, the shelter over the memorial stone transforms into a temple.
