Thevaram is the first of the twelve thirumurai sung on the Vedic deity Shiva. Thevaram is a collection of songs sung by Thirugnanasambandar, Thirunavukarasunayanar and Sundaramoorthy Nayanar in various revisions during these seven editions. Sambandar sang Thirukkadaikappu. Sundarar sang Thirupattu. The + Aaram = Thevaram. Te means off. There is another meaning of grace as well. Aaram means evening. It means the palm tree that receives the grace of the Lord.
Thevara songs sung by Appar became very popular among the people and even the songs sung by Sambandar and Sundara came to be known as Thevaram. These songs were later compiled by Nambi Thirumurai. The songs of the saiva trio were compiled into a total of seven editions. Thevaram has become the common name for all these. This pride belongs to Appar.
