
Towards our places – Mandoor
Mandoor is a village located about forty miles south of Batticaloa city in the Batticaloa district of the Eastern Province of Tamileelam. The village is seen to have alle the four districts different land namely Kurinji, Mullai, Marutham and Neythal.
It is believed that the “vel” that Murugan held when he defeated Sooran is still present in the Mandoor Murugan temple. Mandoor is a holy place with a long history and spiritual connection. Mandur is a traditional agricultural village located on the banks of the Batticaloa lake on the southern side. The Murugan temple located here is known as “Chinnakathiragamam”. This temple is one of the Thiruppadiya temples of Eastern Sri Lanka. It is believed that it received the respect, grants, and administrative structure of ancient kings. The administrative system and the old rituals and traditions that were established in the past are still preserved to this day.
Under the leadership of Vannimai, the temple structure and administrative regulations were formulated. They also provided many grants for the temple administration.
The Dutch rule. They were religious fanatics and demolished all the Shaiva temples they saw. The Mandoor Murugan temple was spared because it was in a dense forest area. However, when the Dutch commander heard the Avani festival drum, he ordered the destruction of this temple with artillery.
The priest realized that the Dutch army was coming to destroy the temple and prayed to the Lord. At that time, wasps swarmed and stung in front of the Dutch army. The guns fell. The other Dutch soldiers ran.
Mandoor is a land of such spiritual faith. Mandoor is a place full of traditions of hunter worship and traditions of Velan. A beautiful song was sunged by Swami Vipulantha Adigal about this place and the Murugan temple.
In the history of the Tamileelam freedom struggle, Mandoor stood tall in its sacrifice and bravery. Mandoor has given countless fighters, heroes, patriots, scholars, educators, creators, artists.
