Vatraappalai Kannaki Amman

Vatraappalai Kannaki Amman Temple is a Kannaki Amman temple located in the village of Vatraappalai in the Mullaitivu District of the Vanni plateau in the northern part of Sri Lanka.  The temple is located in a lush environment surrounded by the Nandi Sea, fields and a palm grove, with the villages of Mulliyavalai and Thanniruru as outlying villages.

When the Vanni kings ruled over this Vanni region known as Atangapatru, the kings of Jaffna, Portuguese and Holland paid tribute.  They later became valiant enough to oppose the British who came after them.  The temple was maintained by the Vanni kings during the Portuguese rule.  This ancient history can be traced back to the Pannichai Aadiya Patarcindu which is still read in the temple today.
