Towards our places – Vayavilan

Towards our places – Vayavilan

Vayavilan is located in the Jaffna district in the north of Tamileelam. It is a Tamil land with rich sea and land resources, bordered by the villages of Oddakappulam, Kurumpacity, Mayiliddy and Kadduvan. Vayavilan is a beautiful town with coconut groves, palm groves, and agricultural lands where export crops such as tobacco, onion, and cassava are grown.

The only airport in the north, Palaly Airport, is located in this area. This village has been militarized for a long time. There is still a large army camp nearby.

Apart from this, the village has many educational institutions such as Palaly Government Teachers College, Vayavilan Central College, Vadamoolai Roman Catholic School and Velupillai Vidyasalay, Oddakappulam Roman Catholic School, Kuttiyappulam Government Tamil Kalavan School, etc.

Tharsini Sivalingam, who has made Tamils’ name in the world netball competitions, was selected in the Asian netball team and won many awards. She is a player who led the Sri Lankan netball team as the captain and brought many victories to Sri Lanka. She is also seen as s strength to this village.

The maveerars and patriots who sacrificed their lives to save the land and made their sacrifices for the liberation of Tamileelam were a symbol of the village Vayavilan. The Vayavilan village is proud of these maveerars and patriots.

The places of worship of this beautiful town are the Vayavilan Manambirai Pillayar Temple, Thanthonrip Pillayar, Gnanavairavar Temple, Muthumari Amman Temple, Abhirami Amman Temple, and Kurumbasitti Annamar Temple.

When the Portuguese destroyed our places of worship, the Amman temple was kept safe in a house until the time of the foreigners. Later, a temple was built at the same place and worshipped. Due to this, it was named Manaiudayamman. It is also a town that has many Christian churches such as the Anthony Church and the Vadamoolai Uttharia Maria Church.

Regarding the Tamileelam Liberation War, the first displacement was due to the war that took place in the Palaly Vayavilan areas. The people who were expelled from their own land on 13th May 1986 were allowed to settle back in their own places during the peace period created by the Indian Peace Keeping Force that arrived in 1987. The people who had settled were again expelled for the second time on 15th June 1990 in the same day.

Like a nation that has not been rescued, Vayavilan, which gave its sons and daughters as fighters and heroes to the land in the Eelam struggle, has given many scholars, artists, creators and workers for its development.

Some areas are trapped by the army and are burning with thirst for development. The land of Vayavilan and the minds of the people who live and have lived there are burning with thirst for development.
