Vikrama Rajasinghan was the last monarch of the Kingdom of Kandy, located in central and eastern Ceylon Island. Initially established in the 15th century as a state under the supervision of the Sinhalese Fort Government, Kandy achieved independence in the 16th to 17th centuries
The British military’s entry into Kandy on March 22, 1803, and subsequently on February 10, 1815, led to the eventual annexation of Kandy into British control, formalized by the Treaty of Kandy on March 2, 1815. Post-treaty, the detained Vikrama Rajasingan was exiled to Vellore Fort in Tamil Nadu. Rajasingan lived on a limited pension until his demise on January 30, 1832, and serves as a stark reminder of the British colonial tactic and exploitation of Tamil indigenous territories for their political banishment.
