Women from Tamileelam – who are exemplary before the world
Women have a unique pride in the Eelam struggle. Although women have been incorporated into the LTTE since 1984, separate women’s groups have been formed within the LTTE since the 1990s. Before that, men took the lead. Women were absorbed into all categories and displayed their talents. Women played a vital role not only in the military but also in technology and administration. “Women are here just by name”, this stories do not happen here. All, regardless of gender, have made great history in the armed forces.
10-10-1987 was the day the LTTE took the field against the Indian forces in order to defend their liberation struggle. This day was declared as the “Tamil Eelam Women’s Uprising Day” in memory of the 2nd Lt. Malathi, who was martyred in the clash with the Indian forces at Kopay on the same day. She was the first female hero of the LTTE. It is noteworthy that more than 3000 female freedom fighters were killed in the Eelam struggle.
