Veeramunnai is a historical old Tamil village in the Eastern province, had been subjected to genocide by the Sri Lankan armed forces and Sri Lankan government sponsored Muslim armed home guards since 1954 to 1991. This beautiful entire Tamil Village Faced first barbaric massacre in the year 1954 by Muslim thugs helped by the Singhal Government. The Tamil Villagers had been trying to leave the Village and made many attempts to live in nearby villages like Veerchoolai, Vallathapittai, Mallaikaitheevu and Malvavathi, in order to save their lives.

From 1954 ,almost 36 years Tamil speaking people had a painful tragic history of moving and running for lives and losing loved ones. On 20th June 1990 the Sri Lankan armed forces from the near by army camp, called “Kondaveddvan Army camp”, started to move towards the Tamil villages in the district. Their plan was to wipe out entire Tamil population from the region. They moved with the Muslim Thugs so called Muslim home guards and rounded up Veermunnai, Ivathallupittiya and Veerachollai. They ordered all the people from the villages to come and gather in the Veermooni Temple.

The Tamil people gathered in fear. Theirs fear had become worsen when they heard about the massacre which took place a few days ago in Kalmoonai. The Sri Lankan forces, and the Muslim home guards selected 56 men out of the crowed, some of them were married and had kids. The armed men enjoyed the people begging and crying for not to execute the men.

In Sammthurai Mountain forest people could see the huge fire in the evening, there the Sri Lankan army executed 37 men and threw them into the fire. We can’t describe the feelings of the Tamil people in words. They helplessly watched the fire of their love ones were burning from reachable distance. In the morning they were took by the soldiers, in the evening they were turned into ashes. What crime they have committed other than born in the Island as Tamils.

Nearly after a week on 29th of June they resumed their killing operation. The army arrested 56 Tamil men and forced them to the killing field. Their they started a huge fire in Kondiveeduvaan and shoot and threw them into the fire. Tamil villagers ran from their homes and stayed in Karithievu school which turned into refugee camp. On 4th of July The Sri Lankan army rounded up the refugee camp and arrested 12 men and took them away. After 2 days the boys mothers asked about the fate of their loved ones. The military officers said that they did not know about their where about, they might have been shot dead by unknown men. You might apply for compensation.

On 10th of July the army came again to the refugee camp and arrested remaining ten males and executed them and threw into the fire. On the month of August, after losing their male members in families they returned to their own village where they lived before. On their way 8 women were taken and rapped and killed by military personals.
On 26 of August from Tamil villages Kallvathipuram ,Malwathi and Veemunni 8 people were arrested and took away by the military personal from The Kondiveadvaan army camp. Their fate came into light after the military allow the local administrated council to issue death certificates to the adopted youths.

The killing of Tamil inhabitants entered into third month. On 8th of August The Muslim home guards joined the Sinhala army to accelerate the killings. They helped to arrest 8 Tamil males from the hide out slaughter them and threw into the wells. On 11th of August 1990 The remaining people started to move from the region and made their way towards Mandoor. On their way, they were stopped in front of the army camp called Savalakaddi. The army slaughter 18 people out of the crowd. Remaining people were forced to return to their villages. The next day 12th August Soldiers from the nearby army camps rounded up the villages and carried out a big massacre, people escaped from the killings ran towards Ampari.

Nearly 30 people were admitted In the Ampari hospital for their wounds. The Singhal army rounded up the even the Ampari hospital ,took them away from the beds and executed all. The remaining wandering people from the Tamil villages were hunted by the Sri Lankan security force and disappeared. Neary 15 young Tamil boys escaped from the villages and joined the Tamil Tigers. One Krishnapillai Nethianandan, a freedom fighter from LTTE´s medical unit told this story. And he believed one day their parents and the people grave would dig up again and the world might know why we took weapons against the state terrorism. He mentioned further, that not only the Singhalese people born to live, our lives also matter.
