Francois Gros, a great Tamil scholar from France, has recently passed away.
Mr. Francois Gros (1933-2021), who has been doing research in Tamil since the early 1960s, was Professor of South Indian History and Philology at the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes, an undergraduate research institute under the University of Paris.
Gros began his research career in the Department of Indology at the French Institute of Pondicherry and served as the Director of French Research Institute for the Far East countries from 1977 to 1989.
His involvement extends from Sangam Tamil literature to the contemporary Tamil and has translated various Tamil works into French , includes Paripadal (1968) and Thirukkural Kamathupal (1993) both are oldest literatures originally written in Tamil, 2000 years ago. Translation of contemporary Tamil short stories has been published.
Mr. Gros lived in Lyon, southeastern France, and spent his part of life, every year, in Pondicherry to pursue his research work. He was recently returned to Pondicherry due to ill health, has donated about 10,000 books to the University of Toronto in Canada.
