A brave Tamil who emerged after two thousand years!

A brave Tamil who emerged after two thousand years!

The number of Arabic-speaking people in the world is sixty crores. The number of Tamil-speaking nationalities is also sixty crores. Arabic-speaking people have twenty-three countries in the world and twenty-one countries of their own in the United Nations. The same number of Tamil people do not have any country of their own. There is no chair for Tamil Nadu in the United Nations. Many of us are thinking and regretting this.

We have thought about it in the millions. We have spoken in the thousands. We have published policies in the hundreds. We have formulated plans in the tens. But we have not done a single action.

A young Tamil man set out! A hero among heroes! He is Prabhakaran, the brave son of Tamileelam! He collected weapons. He concluded that there was no other way to save his homeland of Tamileelam, his language and his people, except through armed struggle. He formed an organization called the Liberation Tigers of Tamileelam. He went into the war. Initially, a few young people supported him. Some became many and many became tens of thousands. More than a thousand Tamil youth dedicated their lives and bodies for freedom.

The war lasted not for a year or two. It lasted for many years. Not one, but two governments tried to suppress him. The Sinhala government, which had the majority of the population, could not fight and win against Prabhakaran. In the end, it came to a ceasefire with him. The Sinhala government could not do anything except invite him to talk. As a result, Prabhakaran appears to be an equal to that government today.

The Indian Empire, which defeated China and Pakistan, sent seventy-five thousand soldiers to Tamileelam to suppress Prabhakaran. In the end, it could not suppress or capture him and returned with deception.

There is a beauty in this. Both these governments have a country. They have an army. They have weapons. They have a place to stay. They have food. They have clothing. There are materials and war equipment. There is a navy and a land army.

Not only does Prabhakaran have none of the above, but he has not even had a pair of sandals on his feet, nor a good body, and has been hiding in small forests and bushes for more than two years. Not just for a day, but for more than two years, fighting against both governments.

No one has appeared like this in two thousand years since the Puranaanooru.

There are those who doubted whether Prabhakaran’s actions were right or wrong, those who doubted whether his intentions were good or bad, and those who doubted whether he was going to achieve victory or defeat. But no one has ever doubted that he is a hero.

I wish Prabhakaran a long life in good health, carrying the banner of his ideals, and may he return from the battlefield with many blessings to the country, language and people of Tamileelam.

(An article written by Mutthamilkavalar K. A. P. Viswanatham on his 91st birthday for the magazine ‘Veeravengai’. It was published by scholar Kovai Mahesan on the birth anniversary of Maveeran Prabhakaran in 1990. It is noteworthy that this article was appreciated by all Tamils at that time.)
