A coin issued by the Tamil king Elara, who ruled Sri Lanka with Anuradhapura as his capital around 2,000 years ago (in 161 BCE).

Although it was initially believed that this coin had arrived in Eelam (Sri Lanka) through trade from Tamil Nadu, Prof. Pushparatnam strongly asserts, with detailed numismatic analysis, that the coin was actually minted in Eelam itself.

Just as the belief that this coin came from Tamil Nadu was later proven incorrect, the idea that Elara came from Tamil Nadu to rule Sri Lanka might also be inaccurate. Some researchers believe that Elara was actually born in the region of “Eelavur” in the Poongarip (Poonakari) area, based on the fact that he built the reservoir known as “Vavunikulam.”
The confusion may have also stemmed from mythological stories linking Elara to “Manuniti Cholan” (a legendary Chola king), which could have contributed to the mistaken belief that Elara came from Tamil Nadu.
