A Tamil Young Woman in the 19th Century

A Tamil Young Woman in the 19th Century

This is one of the historical photographs taken in Ceylon (present-day Eelam) during the latter part of the 19th century.

Around the year 1880, this albumen print photograph was captured by the British photographer William Louis Henry Skeen.

During that period, his company, Skeen & Co, played an important role in documenting the tea plantations of Ceylon, the daily lives of its people, different ethnic communities, and traditional forms of dress.

Highlights of the photograph:

Traditional aesthetics:
The clothing, jewellery, and dignified appearance of this young Tamil woman reflect the cultural identity and traditional beauty of Tamil society during that era.

A rare historical record:
These photographs are not merely artistic images; they are valuable historical documents that help us understand the social history of colonial-era Eelam and the lifestyles of our ancestors.
