Jaffna 1987-10-21 – Scattered bodies flowed like rivers of blood. Jaffna Hospital Massacre
People searched for vehicles to take the injured people to the hospital in the Savakachcheri. As a result, the hospital was overflowing with the injured, I also came forward to help in this crisis at the hospital.
Even though there were additional facilities at the Yarlpanam Government Hospital, the injured people refused to go there. A week earlier, on October 21, the people were terrified by the massacre that took place at the Yarlpanam Hospital. When Indian soldiers entered the hospital and committed massacres in a savage manner, 21 people including doctors, nurses and staff were killed there.
Indian soldiers entered the hospital and opened fire with automatic rifles and threw grenades at the patients and medical staff and went on a storm. To support the Indian storm, mortar shells were also fired. They pierced the walls of the hospital, filling it with smoke and dust. Even as the medical staff stood with their hands raised in a gesture of peace and surrender. The Indian peacekeepers stood in the opposite direction, shooting them down and throwing grenades at them.
51 hospital staff and patients were seriously injured in the Indian army’s barbaric attack. In this situation, we could understand the reason why the public was hesitant to go to the Yarlpanam Hospital.
