Captain Anandan, His Birth name was Subramaniam Karunakaran,

is a freedom hero who will never be forgotten in the history of Tamil Eelam’s struggle for freedom. Subramaniam Alagalakshmi was born on 22.11.1968 in the beautiful village of Chemmalai in Manalaru District, Mullaitivu, in the heartland of Tamil Eelam. Born with six sisters and two brothers, he was very talented. He excelled in studies and was very good at sports. The brutality of the Sri Lankan government forces affected Semmalaikaram.

When the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) began to strengthen themselves on the path to the liberation of Tamils, Anandan left in 1983 to join himself as a LTTE. After completing training at the Third training camp of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in India, he returned home as a great LTTE and undertook many tough tasks. On 13 .02.1983, the Kokulai attack was carried out by Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. It is noteworthy that this attack was the first attack by the LTTE on an army camp. Lt. Col. Pulendi Amman also participated in the attack. His team carried out a diversionary attack at Nayaru as part of the Kokulai attack.

Captain Anandan is a close friend of Pulendri Amman. When talking to his friends, they would ask “Enga Padichani Machan”. Anandan would jokingly say, “Let’s go to Chemmalai central college.” Chemmalai is a small town. There was only an ordinary school there back then. But Anandan’s dream was big, and it was clear from his answer. After the Kokulai attack, friends of Pulendhri Amman and Anandan were busy with different tasks. He was responsible for leading the teams in many attacks. During1986’ and 1987’, he was given the responsibility of leading the Makalirani who stayed in Vishwamadukkaddu(forest).

Many soliders and fighters still remember and marvel at the work he did. After the Indian Army’s arrival in Tamil Eelam, the lost Ltd. Kernel Theelepan led a non-violent hunger war after the loss of twelve LTTE soldiers including, his close friend Pulendran on 05.10.1987 which affected many. The Indian Army was also setting up camps in the forest area, at the time pushing people away. Captain Anandan became popular in the hearts of many people by leading attacks against them. His bravery was such that the Indian army and gangs would freeze in the camps at the mention of Anandan’s name in Vavuniya District.

He was an audacious figther for the enemy and worthy of many leaders’ trusts. He took action to suppress the Indian army. In Vavunia, he drove a van alone to a military checkpoint where people were being interrogated. He disguised himself as a normal person, hiding his gun and driving the van through the checkpoint. As usual, some soldiers came to check him. He suddenly took out his guns and fired at the soldiers standing there and fled in his truck. Anandan drove away, confusing and staggering the army.

Later, out of fear, the army did not search for him for several days. But the army was afraid to investigate people knowing that only one person named Anandan had done this. This was an amazing accomplishment at that time. Anandan was a brave man. Our struggle for freedom is not great without such soldiers. Agility, high-speed operations, and excellent planning were the best qualities of Anandan. His tall upright appearance, smiling face, and clear determination in his eyes tell the beholders of his heroism. He is well known to the people of Vavuniya district in Vanni. Lt. Col. Gracey, who died in 1991, was also one of his close friends.

On the same day (05.10.1989), Captain Anandan’s team attacked the camp of the Indian army set up at Mullai-Mankulam junction. With the memory of his dear comrade Pulendran and other comrades in his mind, a fierce fight took place. The area which had fields on all four sides, was not suitable for a long-term attack. Therefore, after inflicting heavy losses on the enemy, the LTTE team led by Captain Anandan retreated to the city. While crossing the fields, they faced a barrage of shelling and an aerial attack.

Meanwhile, Anandan who was running while carrying the body of his comrade Captain Bharat who died, was seriously injured. Realizing that he could no longer move, he ordered other fighters to leave and bowed to the ground after taking cyanide as per LTTE tradition. Later, the Indian army, who captured his body, dragged him along the Mankulam road. Knowing that it was Anandan, they blew their trumpets. The mercenaries hung the body of Captain Anand on a tree near Mankulam. Somehow, when this news reached his mother’s ears, she went to the Mankulam army camp without fear. The scene she saw at that time took her to the limit of grief. Captain Anand’s body was fattened and burnt in the middle of the road. It has been 34 years since she commemorated his comrade’s death anniversary.

While stationed at Vavuniya, Captain Anandan wrote a letter to his eldest daughter-in-law who has turned 12 years old. “Uncle is writing this letter to his little loving daughter-in-law.  Be well. Listen to mom and dad’s advice. It is necessary for you to fight for the liberation of Tamil Eelam. For that, study a lot. You can’t do anything at a young age. Wrong decisions and wrong paths will destroy your life. You will get freedom in the way of the leader. With love forever, your uncle. He had written many more instructions. The little girl jumped with happiness when she received this letter and did not expect this. She celebrated in her heart the understanding of her uncle and his love for her in the struggle. She cited Chinnamama as an example of her affection. Within a few months of that letter, the news of her uncle’s heroic death came as a shock to her. She adopted his uncle’s path as her own.

It is noteworthy that Captain Anandan’s younger brother Captain Semmalaiyan was martyred on 18.10.1995 during the Sri Lankan army’s Sooriyak kathir operation. Andandan’s loss sparked the uprising of many youths. Carrying the dreams of Captain Anandan, thousands of heroes and millions of people have been resurrected. The legs are rushing on the path of liberation with the determination of passing generations.
