Background of the formation of the first Christian church in India

Thomas, one of his 12 disciples who were with Jesus, is believed by Christians to have come to India and preached Christianity and to have carried out various missions.

Called St. Thomas, St.  Thomas was one of the twelve angels Jesus chose for his gospel mission.  He is also known as ‘Suspicious Thomas’ because he initially refused to believe what other angels said about ‘Jesus is risen’.

“You are my Lord! You are my God !!”  His words to Jesus are very famous.  These words are engraved on the tomb of the angel.

St.Thomas Syro-Malabar Catholic Church in Thrissur Although still a Catholic church today, it is also known as the first Christian church in India .

The temple is located in Palaiyur, Thrissur district in the state of Kerala.  It is the first of the 7 temples built by Thomaiyar(Thomas) in Kerala.  Later, a new church was built around the old church .

The church was destroyed during the invasion of Tipu Sultan in the 18th century.  After that, it was rebuilt. There are two large pools near its west and east gates.

The festival is held here for 2 days every year.  The festival is held irrespective of caste or religion.  Thousands of people will take part in this festival called Palaiyur Maha Tirtha Danam . Then, the fireworks and music festival takes place

Christianity in Sri Lanka

Christianity is a minority religion in Sri Lanka.  One of Jesus’ apostles died in AD.  There is speculation that at the time of the introduction of Christianity to India in 52, Christianity may have been introduced to Sri Lanka, which is close to India.  It is mentioned that Christian merchants stayed in Sri Lanka in the 6th century and built a church and engaged in Christian activities.  Roman Catholicism was introduced to Ceylon by the Portuguese in 1505.  Conversion by the Dutch in the 17th century.  Thus the number of Christians increased by 10 per cent.  This number then decreased.
