The first female LTTE Major Yalini and the LTTE Major Nithan, the LTTE Captain Sathurian Thandikulam – Nochimottai attack…
While the army was busy with military ambitions regarding Puliyankulam, a disaster befell the soldiers in Thandikulam. On 10.06.1997, the LTTE launched a surprise attack on the Thandikulam – Nochimottai areas.
The soldiers had expected the LTTE to attack the occupied half. But the Sinhala commanders would not have expected the places the LTTE had prepared for the attack.
The soldiers, who were expecting the LTTE to attack Omanthai and its north, were shocked to be hit right at the gates of Vavuniya.
Carrying explosives in the body
The command headquarters of the Iyasikurui force was in Thandikulam. The explosives and medical supplies needed for the fighting were stored in this area. The Iyasikurui place was fed with grenades, mortar shells and war grenades. The LTTE adopted the tactic of slowing down the place by putting a button on it.
In this attack, thousands of grenades and hundreds of war grenades were destroyed in the fire. Many military vehicles were destroyed. Some were damaged. At least 400 soldiers were killed and more than 570 were injured.
Sinhalese commandos tried to land in helicopters to help the soldiers trapped in the attack zone.
Brother Nithan and sister Yalini our hero
In this incident, an “M. I. 24” helicopter was severely damaged. The soldiers who were trying to reach the Nochimottai area from the Omanthai areas for help were attacked. Two ranks were destroyed in this.
The Thandikulam-Nochimottai areas were under the control of the LTTE for at least 24 hours.
The first female ground Karumpuli Major Yalini’s description
The Thandikulam attack was the first fatal blow to the Aiyasikurui army. During the government’s propaganda that “the tigers are fleeing into the forest”, it was reported that some of the surviving Thandikulam soldiers disguised themselves – dressed as civilians – and fled to Vavuniya. During this massive attack, 80 fighters, including three Karumpuli, became maaverar.
