For the first time in the history of the Tamileelam struggle
For the first time in the history of the Tamileelam struggle, the Naval Team of LTTE attacked a Navy ship in broad daylight on 28.02.1992.
The Sri Lanka Navy’s coastal patrol ship Sawatan was engaged in patrolling the area between Kankesanthurai Port and Vetrilakeni under the pretext of providing security to the troops stationed in Vetrilakeni, Yarlpanam District.
At that time, they continued their riot by carrying out merciless attacks on fishermen engaged in fishing at sea. Due to this, the livelihood of these people was affected, and their existence was in question. All the information related to this was reported to the national leader by the commanders of the LTTE Naval Team. After seriously investigating all the matters related to this, the national leader called the LTTE Naval Team who were growing up at that time and said that we, the LTTE Naval Team, are responsible for the protection of the coastal people.
Therefore, if we want to restore the livelihood of these people and normal life, we ordered them to attack the coastal patrol post of the Sri Lanka Navy, Sawattan, and protect the people. In addition, since it was the maiden attack of the LTTE Naval Team, he gave an attack plan accordingly. Accordingly, the teams led by Brindan master, who was the Vice Commander of the LTTE Naval Team at that time monitored the movements of the Navy’s patrol ship through radar and collected data.
At the same time, Special Commander Soosai, Lieutenant Colonel Gangai Amaran, who was the Commander of the LTTE Naval Team at that time, and Lieutenant Colonel Charles, who was the Commander of the Sea Attack at that time, carried out all the work effectively according to the attack plan given by the national leader, as this was the first attack by the LTTE Naval Team.
Based on the intelligence information provided by Brindan master´s radar, on the afternoon of 28.02.1992, the Sri Lanka Navy’s naval ship Savattan, which was heading towards the Vetrilakeni military base from the Kankesanthurai port, was intercepted and attacked in the waters of Yarlpanam. They conducted this battle, which lasted about two hours, and Commander Gangai Amaran and Commander Charles led the naval battle.
All these operations were led by Special Commander Soosai and Deputy Commander Brindan Master from the Thalayadi area.
At that time, there was no mechanical power to unload the boats, so the civilians unloaded and loaded the boats from the Vetrilakeni camp towards the Thalayadi area and protected them.
Four fighters were killed in this successful attack.
The coastal people with different seafaring experience from different regions were brought together to unload and load the boats for this sea battle, and the wounded and martyred. Despite the heavy shelling, the coastal forces completed the operation within the specified time with the full participation of the fighter Lt. Col. Maravan Master. Therefore, the LTTE Naval Team were ready to do anything for the people even in unfavorable terrain.
Through this attack, the LTTE Naval Team made it clear to the Sinhala government that this is what will happen if they attack civilians in the deep sea.
