Forgotten Kali Amman Temple of Anuradhapuram – A 1000-Year-Old Historical Witness!
In the heart of the holy city of Anuradhapuram, just 500 meters from the Thooparama Datukopama — the once-glorious Kali Amman Temple is now hidden among the rocks.
Speciality of the statue:
The most beautifully designed statue of Mahishamarthini Amman found in Sri Lanka was found here!
This amazing statue, which is fully adorned with a conch, katha, sword, bow, trident in its eight arms — a crown, a garland, an amulet, and a silam, today adorns the National Museum in Colombo.
Historical Significance:
✅ Built by Tamil traders from various countries during the Polonnaruwa period in the 19th century, archaeologist H.C.B. Discovered by Bell
✅ A temple with 20 pillars including the sanctum, stage mm.
✅ Inscription evidence of King Parakramabahu’s wife Lilavati was also found here
Painful truth:
All the Buddhist places of worship in Anuradhapuram have been renovated and are shining. But this thousand-year-old Kali Amman temple alone stands on the verge of destruction without any care.
Shouldn’t this historical symbol be preserved?
