Kantharodai Viharai: Another Structured Genocide of Tamils Under the Cover of Antiquities
Land grabbing and the army guarding it:
The news of a Buddhist temple being built in Kantharodai Yarlpanam is not an ordinary structural violation. Yarlpanam is the ancient land of the Tamil homeland with a contempt for the rule of law and local authority. This is another gruesome episode in the structural genocide that the Sinhala-chauvinist Sri Lankan government has been imposing on the Tamils for decades. This violation, carried out by a chauvinist monk in the shadow of an army camp, is yet another testimony to how deeply the roots of occupation have penetrated the Tamil homeland.
Kantharodai: The historical cradle of Tamils being targeted
Let us make one thing clear. This is not an inter-religious issue. This is a political occupation that cuts off the historical roots of an ethnic group. Kantharodai is not just a piece of land. It is the historical cradle of the Tamils for thousands of years. The archaeological remains there are fragments of the ancient civilization of the Tamils. The Sinhala chauvinist government, wearing its false mask of “archaeology”, is waging a grand war of historical distortion that links all traces of Tamil history with Sinhala-Buddhist history. What took place in Kurunthoormalai is now taking place in Kantharodai.
The trinity of chauvinism: monks, army, government department.
The alliance of these three forces is clearly visible in every land grab that occurs in the Tamil homeland.
Chauvinist monks: These are the ones who wear “saffron robes” and take the first step towards land grabbing in the name of spirituality. They do not respect the law and threaten the local people. Their action is not a spiritual quest. It is the beginning of a planned land grab.
Army: The army acts as a shield to protect these illegal constructions and to intimidate the Tamil people who oppose it. The reason why this construction is happening near the army camp is an expression of the arrogance of the authorities that says, “There is no one here to say against us.”
State machinery: They do not get the permission of the Tamils Committee, which is made up of representatives of the local Tamil people. Because they know they have government departments with Sinhala as the Department of Archaeology and the Department of Forestry.

This is a form of ethnic cleansing
Eliminating an ethnic group is not just about killing them with weapons. Taking away their land, destroying their history, destroying their cultural symbols, changing their places of worship, and questioning their very existence are all different forms of genocide. That is what is happening in Kantharodai today.
Their long-term goal is to establish a Buddhist center, establish systematic Sinhala settlements in the area, and over time, destroy the ethnic heritage of Kantharodai and turn it into a Sinhala-Buddhist region. This is a culture war waged without weapons.
What is rising today in Kantharodai is not just a building. It is another symbol of aggression against the Tamil homeland. If we fail to stop this invasion, tomorrow’s history will not forgive us. This is not just a fight for a land. It is a fight for our existence!
