Karumpuli Lt. Col. Cholan

Karumpuli Lt. Col. Cholan

The unchanging human hearts that are waiting to be welcomed in the houses that are crowded with people. The heroic motherland that is waiting for the victory that sent the children of the Tamileelam freedom struggle. All these show that the existence of the Tamils has not yet been destroyed. These people who live on the land do not want to lose their land to the Sinhala occupation. They are not ready to lose not only the land but also the culture that is the foundation of their lives.

But Sinhala chauvinism is determined to destroy and occupy both. By killing them indiscriminately, it created a sense of fear and decided to take away this land and culture. The result of this decision of Sinhala chauvinism was the Kokkatticholai massacre (28,29,30-01-1987 – 233 innocent Tamils were killed in three days), the Sathurukonda massacre (09-09-1990 – more than 150 people including 42 boys and 85 women were killed), the Vantharumulai massacre (05-09-1990 – 158 Tamil youths were murdered by cutting, shooting, burning and burning to death), the Pullumalai massacre, the Udumbankula massacre, the Thonithandanmadu massacre and so on.

The mastermind behind all these massacres was none other than Lari, who was promoted to Major General after his death. Wijeratne (Uttama Seva Padakkama, Sri Lanka Armed Services Long Service Medal, North and East Operations Medal, Purna Bhumi Padakkama, Operation Wadamarachchi Medal, Riviresa Campaign Services Medal, and 50th Independence Anniversary Commemoration Medal for his service during his military career) and his wife, Brigadier Indira Wijeratne of the Sri Lanka Army Legal Branch, are also an army officer.

Major Lari Wijeratne, a Sinhala extremist officer who planned several massacres and killed hundreds of Tamil lives, was arrested by the intelligence services and conducted intensive intelligence gathering to settle accounts with the Sinhala militant officer Major Lari Wijeratne. Lari Wijeratne was different in his interactions with the people, pretending to share in the joys and sorrows of the people, including the household details of the people. He became adept at gathering intelligent information from the people themselves.

Lari Wijeratne had established many public structures to identify our fighters who lived among the people. He tried to infiltrate agents who gave him information into citizen groups and awareness groups and obtain information about the members of the underground movement. As a result, Ilancheliyan, who was in charge of the North Maratha Intelligence Department, was identified and surrounded by the army. In the ensuing conflict, he kissed this land as Major Ilancheliyan. Following that he received information about the bunker where seven fighters were hiding in the Vathiri area, and through a siege attack, they destroyed the bunker through direct combat. All seven fighters were killed in the Vathiri of the Vadamaradchi.

The moments that became the most challenging period for many of the intelligence fighters standing on the Vadamaradchi were the time when they had to send that villain away. The secret fighters were gathering their intelligence information and conducting espionage operations and reporting it to the leadership. Accordingly, based on information confirmed a month earlier, it was decided to attack this villain through a secret Karumpuli attack.

Accordingly, a fighter named “Emerson” who had been active in the Naval Team of the LTTE was selected and the training began. “Cholan”, one of the officers in charge of the Intelligence Department, was appointed to supervise and guide him. This Cholan was the site officer who had collected information on Lari Wijeratne and obtained accurate information. The training for both took place at an Intelligence Department training camp located in Mullaithivu.

Emerson, who was full of enthusiasm and always had a sense of humor, was affectionately called “Sweet Uncle” by all of us, while Cholan, who had a calm nature, had a very elegant, tall, slender figure. He was able to calmly process, guide and guide the fighters. His calm nature was the reason we were able to joke about him. He, on the other hand, did not exaggerate it and joined us in creating chaos in those places. The site manager Cholan, who had coordinated Emerson’s attack strategies, and his security intelligence team were ready to leave.

During the year 1998, the intelligence department’s movement route to Yarlpanam was the Yarlpanam sea area. The team’s objective was to reach the Vadamaradchi area by penetrating the eastern Arialai area of Yarlpanam, where the most critical military defenses were located. Accordingly, the team’s movements were coordinated by the then Yarlpanam District Intelligence Department’s in-charge, Mr. Gnanavel, and the Assistant in-charge.

The attack team began its movement under the guidance of Pradeep. After reaching the eastern Arialai area through the Yarlpanam sea channel and positioning the attacker Emerson in the Varani area through Maddvil, it began its movement towards Paruthithurai with the site manager Cholan. In a successful journey, the site manager Cholan is positioned in the Paruthithurai area. Emerson was positioned in the Varani area for security reasons. After the work of the movement team was effectively completed, the security team returned to the Vanni.

As mentioned earlier, what is the important information regarding Lari Wijeratne? What is the attack plan? Let’s see now. Lari Wijeratne, who had captivated the people of the North with his intelligence tactics, was promoted and appointed as the Director of the Kothalawela Military College, and on the very day that he was to be replaced, he was to be the special guest at the farewell ceremony organized by the Yarlpanam Paruthithurai Business Association.

On that day, May 14, 1998, the base commander confirmed the planned attack directly at the base with confirmed information and tried to call the Karumpuli Emerson, who was stationed in the Varani area to carry out the attack, to the Paruthithurai area. Varani area was cordoned off by the army for a search operation that day, so that Emerson could not reach the Paruthithurai area. Emerson hid in his hidden location.

The above-mentioned issue of Emerson’s movement being obstructed was reported to the base commander Cholan. Understanding the dire situation, Chola immediately prepared to carry the gunpowder and sulfur package himself, acting like a Karumpuli. After several conversations with the leadership, Cholan was advised not to go, and that attempts could be made to destroy the target later, and that the officers in charge could launch multiple attacks and destroy multiple targets, so the attack should be postponed. Although many requests were made to Cholan, Cholan refused. He firmly stated that he was going to carry out the attack himself, that he had also rehearsed the attack during the training exercise, that the attack could be carried out easily and successfully, and that if the target was missed, we would have to face many losses due to the target, and that he would go with the ammunition himself, and cut off his communication.

The building located in the Paruthithurai bus station area was waiting with a garland to welcome the departing military officer. Cholan patiently and attentively stood at the first Kucholungai area of Paruthithurai and waited for the target. The event was a stumbling event. Poetic praises, the garland Chola is waiting with a gold chain as a gift along with the gift, carrying in his mind our youth who have changed the minds of our innocent people, caused many hardships, and disappeared.

The time is approaching. 1.45 pm. Cholan, wearing a sulfur explosive vest, collided with a vehicle that was approaching in a Land Rover surrounded by security forces. Sinhala language is scattered everywhere. Smoke rises from the sky. Four soldiers, including Lari Wijeratne, are scattered in the middle of the shattered vehicle. J.R. From the Jayewardene era to the Chandrika Bandaranaike era, he had served for 15 years in the Tamileelam Liberation War by attacking the Tamils (of which he had served as the 514th Brigade Commander in the North for two and a half years), and was promoted to the rank of Major General and appointed as the officer-in-charge of the Kotlavalala Military University before he could be transferred. Before he could leave, the attack on that terrible Lari Wijeratna took place in the Tamil homeland itself and he was destroyed.

Our Cholan, who had waited and ended the story of enmity, became “Lieutenant Colonel Cholan” and went down in history as the first indirect Karumpuli with a Karumpuli mind. As a fighter, a responsible person, and a leader of the attack, the active Cholan, knowing the situation, transformed into a Karumpuli and the heroic epic history belongs to him.

With your memories…
