Kumarikandam

Kumari (kumari Kandam) of the Indian Ocean located in the south, which is considered to have been lost is a continent [2] . It is also considered as an important land area associated with the ancient Tamil civilization. The area was also known as Kumarikandam and Kumari Nadu.

In the 19th century, a section of European and American scholars speculated that there may have been a submerged continent called Ilemuria. The idea came to them when they tried to explain the geography and other similarities between Africa , Australia , India and Madagascar . A section of Tamil Renaissance supporters accepted this theory. They linked it with the legends of the Pandyas who browsed their lands as described in ancient Tamil literature .

The ancient Tamil civilization was on the continent of Ilemuria. These writers claim that the continent was devastated and went into the sea. In the 20th century, Tamil writers used the name ‘Kumarik Continent’ to describe the submerged continent of Ilemuria. The Ilemuria continental theory became obsolete with the later discovered plate alignment theory. However, this concept continues to be popular among Tamil renaissance writers of the 20th century. According to these scholars, there were two societies formed here by Tamil literary scholars during the reign of the Pandyas who ruled Ilemuria. Kumari Continent helps to prove the antiquity of Tamil language and culture They claim that Tamils are the cradle of civilization.
