Lieutenant Colonel Thiyagan

Lieutenant Colonel Thiyagan: Maveeran of the most naval battles in the history of the Tamil Eelam war.

Lieutenant Colonel Thiyagan
Chandrasekharam Pillai Dasakumaran
Death: 13.08.2007

Incident: During a direct battle with the Sri Lankan Navy in the Pulmottai sea area of Thirikonamalai.

In late 1991, due to the continuous military aggression and attacks on the people, Thiyagan joined the LTTE. He completed his initial training at the second training camp of the Naval Team, Jappan 02, which was named after the maveeran Major Jappan. Thiyagan went to the Naval Team’s military school for further training. He excelled in studies and sports, especially in the telecommunications class. Knowing his interest in telecommunications, the Deputy Commander of the Naval Team, Brindan Master, took him to the telecommunications station for combat, supply operations, or maritime surveillance. Thiyagan was taught how to accurately match boats on the radar, which boat was the enemy’s, and which was the LTTE Naval Team´s boat. Having acquired knowledge of telecommunications, Thiyagan later worked at a telecommunications station.

He continued to travel as a telecommunications operator in supply and naval operations. Later, he became the commanding officer of a battleship. When a group of boats was sent there for maritime operations and naval combat in the Mannar district, Special Commander Soosai, who observed his steady progress, appointed him as the commanding officer of the battleships. In operation “Oyaatha Alaikal 03” Thiyagan played a major role in the attack against the navy in Kalali Neereri, Yarlpanam, and strengthened the Aanayiravu rescue operation. He continued to play a major role in assisting the ground attack in the war to liberate Yarlpanam. After that, the credit for changing the situation in the Mullaithivu sea area on 16.09.2001 belongs to Thiyagan. He served as the Block Command Officer in most of the supply security forces and naval combatants deployed at sea.

He was appointed as the Naval Team´s Sea Attack Commander in the fourth Eelam War. After that, he wanted to bring about a change in the sea attack. He consulted with the Special Commander and experienced fighters and formed a group of small boats, took the Naval Team and searched for the enemy in his place for several days and disrupted his operations.

A commander who, despite his experiences in many difficult naval battles, did not let the boats be separated, but acted in the same way as naval commanders acted in difficult times, recovered from those difficult situations, and united the boats and attacked the enemy with the same speed. The way he interacted with the fighters. We can go on and on about the sacrifice in this way.

The national leader gave the Naval Team a plan to bring a group of fighters led by Senior Commander Sornam from Thirikonamalai to Vanni. Along with that, a notification was also given: a large group was going to go from Thirikonamalai to Vanni. The enemy sent a message to his officers, which was reported by the LTTE’s spying team. It was in such an environment that this deployment operation took place. This supply security operation took place under the leadership of Lieutenant Colonel Thiyagan. In accordance with the national leader’s opinion that nothing should happen to those coming for supply, he provided security to the supply teams and in a sea battle against a large enemy fleet, he did not let the boats leave and did not let the navy ships go to the supply boats. He fought until the end and became maveeran on 13.08.2007.

Thiyagan´s loss was a huge loss for the Naval Team if the LTTE. Thiyagan´s sister also became maveeran in this struggle.
